MERRYLANDS COMMUNITY WELCOMES NEW PUBLIC MEETING PLACE

Merrylands community welcomes new public meeting place

HUB was delighted to attend the official opening of the Merrylands Civic Square project in NSW on 4th of August 2023.

It was an incredible experience to partner with indigenous artist Adam Laws to help shape a former derelict site into a new town square that now serves as a destination for people from all walks of life, while reminding us also of the importance of waterways as a source of connectivity.

And it was this connection to country, and water in particularly, that is the design feature in the bespoke artwork installations that HUB helped bring to life.

A series of 12 structures of a tree like nature are the centre piece of this new public place, ranging in size from  five metres to about three and a half metres.

Adam designed a series of patterns for the supporting structures, resembling tree scars, flowing water, a reptilian motif and an x-ray of fish bones.

These artwork patterns were transformed into the cladding of the structures, wrapped around each pole.

The underside of the structures comprise a mirror polished stainless steel material, resembling water ripples.

The strong water theme continues through the structure design, with each canopy able to capture rainwater through a funnel within the soffit, enabling it to run down the exterior of the cladding. This has achieved a very interesting interplay between water and the structures themselves.

We would like to congratulate the City for investing in this project, offering an important public place where people will be able to connect with one another and forge new relationships, while enjoying a strong artistic connection to the country as interpreted through the eyes of local indigenous artist, Adam Laws.
